When in cochin

Cochin is one of my absolute favorite places,i have grown up here and eating is my absolute favorite thing, so here is everything to eat in cochin.
mostly my favorite places.

1) Grand hotel: on Mg road this is one of the oldest hotels in town. almost always crowded with a ten minute wait lunch at this place is zimbly zooper.
to have: you can have "oon"- mallu word for meals/thali.
comes with rice,fish curry/veg meals if you wish,thoran ( vegetable fried together) sambhar. there are small dabbas of three things that come along,prawns mashed up and dried with coconut,some type of small fish cooked in coconut again ( peera), its basically fish made in mud utensil (chatti) and there is sweet pickle,dates i think.

must order: ammachy's kozhi roast,slightly sweet in thick gravy with succulent pieces of chicken and tomato.

the dum biriyani: is a big sell out, though personally am not so fond of biriyani's
the surprise dish is the beef stroganoff which is my favorite, white rice cooked to perfection.slightly tasting of butter and the beef strips done well and the sauce not too rich or too watery. not white sauce, brown.

my second favorite are the mutton cutlets served for snack and also the schezwan beef,crisp and dried with red capsicum.

2) if you are a biriyani person you have to go to kayika's biriyani place, in either mattanchery/ next to bharat tourist home.
the mutton biriyani, my mother swears by.
they also have fried chicken,pretty oily but what the hell.

3) cocoa tree: for all your dessert needs.
these guys have a decent cheesecake and chocolate shakes. do not have their burger-its soggy and the patty is always slightly undone. the french fries arent so great either.
but do try their chocolate cakes. trifle and also their smoothies.
i guarantee you the mango smoothie is an absolute wonder.

4) Kashi: in fort cochin is one of those slightly artsy places. very outdoorsy feeling inside too. with painting exibitions going on mostly.
todays menu can be from carrot soup to egg sandwich.
but always to eat is the chocolate cake that comes with the chocolate sauce with masala chai / lime soda. awesomeness.

5) The fish stalls in fortcochin: they cook you the fish you pick out and do it immedietly so that its hot and hot( spicy)
carry your beer if you dont want to walk around looking for some.
have the giant prawns fried with onion rings or the mackarel( ayila) fried and then garnished with lime and onions.

6) Brunton's boatyard: there is really nothing here that stands out immedietly.go there more for the ambience. with the sea in the backdrop and always breezy, perfect for brunch/dinner

7) Anne's bakery: in kadavanthara opposite varkeys, this is the absolute best bakery in town. their cakes are to die for. their cutlets and sandwiches and meat loaf is the best best best. and lastly their doughtnuts. go before 1 in the afternoon cos its mostly over by then.

8) lumiere: this is a new place in panampilly nagar. it was called crossroads before.
they have organic stuff sold here, cakes and cookies and bread and vegetables.
before lunch they give you pineapple and mint juice or beetroot juice all pretty good i gota say.
try the karimeen fry-the best i have had in town.

9)Indian coffee house: obviously a place i still like despite it not serving anything worthwhile anymore.
try the beef omelette and the beef cutlets. crisp and full they still taste pretty good with the kaapi of course.
stay clear of masala dosa- too much beet root issues going on.i go for the whole nostalgia.

10) Andhra meals at the eatery above tandoor, near Tdm Hall.
best meals ever! excellent andhra stuff, if you like the spicy kodikoora but is called something else. the fish fry is ok too.
stick to basic meals.
